Summary

Did you know The pumpkin can save your life if your skin is burnt? An experiment done On rats shows that pumpkins have healing properties. The use of pumpkins completely cured the rat's burnt skin, and their hair also started growing. Pumpkin can heal the skin completely if your skin is burnt. But 1400 years ago, the holy Quran mentions the use of pumpkin for the cure of prophet Yunus (Jonah) when his skin was burnt by whale's stomach acid. God Says: We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill. and caused a pumpkin plant to grow over him. The Holy Quran acknowledges advanced Medical techniques. Beside this there are several benefits of this plant. It grows quickly, its leaves offer shade because of their large size and smooth texture, flies do not come near it, and its fruits provide good nourishment and treatment 

Abstract

Pumpkin, a widely cultivated vegetable, has been recognized for its nutritional and medicinal properties for centuries. Recent scientific studies have revealed its potential in treating skin burns, with experiments on rats demonstrating its ability to promote healing and regeneration. Interestingly, the Quran, revealed over 1400 years ago, mentions the use of pumpkin in the healing of Prophet Yunus (Jonah), whose skin was burnt by the acidic environment of a whale's stomach. This paper explores the scientific evidence supporting pumpkin's healing properties, its historical and religious significance, and its potential applications in modern medicine. By examining both scientific research and religious texts, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of pumpkin's therapeutic benefits and its acknowledgment in the Quran as a healing agent.

Introduction

Pumpkin (*Cucurbita pepo*) is a member of the Cucurbitaceae family and is widely cultivated for its edible fruit, seeds, and flowers. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, pumpkin has long been valued for its nutritional benefits. However, recent scientific investigations have uncovered its potential as a therapeutic agent, particularly in the treatment of skin injuries such as burns. Experiments conducted on rats have shown that pumpkin can accelerate wound healing, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue regeneration.

The Quran, the holy book of Islam, contains a reference to pumpkin in the context of healing. In Surah As-Saffat (37:145-146), it is mentioned that Prophet Yunus (Jonah) was thrown onto a shore in a state of illness, and a pumpkin plant was caused to grow over him to provide treatment for his acidic burnt skin by whale's stomach acid . This reference, made over 1400 years ago, aligns remarkably with modern scientific findings about pumpkin's healing properties. The high water content of pumpkin helps maintain skin hydration, which is essential for wound healing.

Studies have shown that pumpkin extract possesses significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These effects are attributed to the presence of bioactive compounds such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, and carotenoids. After being expelled onto a shore, Yunus was in a state of physical and emotional distress. The Quran states:  

"We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill. And We caused a pumpkin plant to grow over him." (Quran 37:145-146)

Pumpkin aqueous extract has been utilized in the synthesis of iron nanoparticles, which have shown high efficacy in inhibiting pathogenic microorganisms commonly associated with burn wound infections. These nanoparticles have demonstrated significant potential in enhancing burn wound healing and promoting hair growth in treated areas (Ahmed).

Comparative Studies and Efficacy

Comparative studies involving pumpkin extracts and other natural oils, such as linseed and prickly pear, have shown that pumpkin oil is effective in reducing healing time and improving wound appearance. In particular, pumpkin oil has been noted for its ability to decrease healing time significantly when compared to control treatments (Bardaa et al. 464-72)
